ALIED Headaches Acupuncture Course

Acupuncture Course Development

As with most ALIED courses, the content of this course will be developed to meet the needs of the students. The Tutor will discuss with the course organiser what she/he requires to be covered. Then, at the course itself, the content will be adapted to the needs and abilities of the students.

Typical Acupuncture Course Content

The Treatment of Myofascial Headaches with Trigger Point Needling

This course will look at the Myofascial component of headaches, which require the use of Trigger Point acupuncture to reduce pain and restore function. The course will address recent research advances in the field of neural inhibitory mechanisms, Myofascial pain physiology and acupuncture research, which will enhance students physiotherapy practice and manual skills.

The course provides a theoretical explanation using an evidence-based structure to demonstrate the physiological mechanisms of trigger point acupuncture incorporating principles and theoretical underpinning from Gerwin [1997, Travell and Simons 1992] whilst retaining the physiological theories of dorsal horn and descending acupuncture inhibitory mechanisms.
